Say what you will about SheezyArt's recent adblock party. Whether you were pissed or whether you found it retardedly amusing, there's a fact that cannot be denied - it's anything but professional.
I've been at SheezyArt pretty much since it was founded. I came here because at the time deviantART's mods were arrogant sellouts that didn't listen to their users. In a way some of them still are - but the difference is that deviantART has matured. They have an abundance of services to provide to their userbase, both paid and free. It's a relatively bug-free site by comparison, it has an enormous userbase, and most importantly - the mods ACT LIKE PROFESSIONALS.
They don't harass people into clicking ads or buying subscriptions. Yes, occasionally, I'll go to dA and there's a click-through page that says "HEY BUY A SUBSCRIPTION YOU GET ALL THESE COOL FEATURES" but that happens pretty rarely. Also, dA's ads mostly consist of promoting the USERS.
And most importantly, the deviantArt subscription is worth it.
End of story.
But this isn't a blog comparing Sheezy to deviant, because that would be retarded. Sheezy has always been more accepting of cartoon works, Sheezy lets you upload music, and Sheezy actually featured one of my songs once many years ago.
But what Sheezy lacks...is professionalism. There are about a thousand better ways to encourage users to help you get revenue than the course of action that was taken. I suppose it was probably funny to people on the other side of the fence. At least in a 4-chan inspired troll sort of way.
But something that needs to be understood is that people don't generally respond well to this kind of thing, especially if they feel pressured to do something they don't want to do.
You can call it "baww-ing" or tell us to "cry moar" as much as you want, but doing so just reflects the juvenile nature of your attitudes. This isn't 4chan, and you're not anonymous. It's a BUSINESS. And as a paid employee or even an unpaid site moderator, you represent a BUSINESS.
I'm not saying that you have to be all SRS BZNS all the time, but treating your users with respect and common courtesy isn't too much to ask. In fact, it's one of the best things you can do to get your business to thrive.
The adblock party was pretty much a way to say "HEY ADBLOCK USERS - FUCK YOU. TURN IT OFF OR GTFO." No warnings, no "Hey guys we need to talk about adblock and ad revenue" heart to hearts...no. Instead, we get a middle finger.
And yes, it's over. And instead of aural assault and epileptic flashing we have a joking death threat which probably would have been a hell of a lot funnier had the adblock party not happened.
Even so, the message remains the same - "If you're not bringing us money we don't want you here".
This doesn't encourage people to give you money. Instead it drives away users and guests alike.
Sheezy can claim that its actions are justified, but I don't buy that. If your business is failing because of a lack of funds, find a way around it that doesn't involve annoying a large percentage of your customers. Or at least work on the site and make it more appealing to your users so that they'll gladly pay you. People reward businesses that provide excellence with a smile. We're not getting that from you, Sheezy, so you can wipe that self-righteous grin off your face.
I don't particularly WANT to leave, but if this is the kind of solution our mod team provides to this problem I can't even begin to imagine how they'll fix other bigger problems in the future. :(
I just randomly saw a picture of Geno on the front page and decided to check it out, and there was a whole comic, so I read through it, while seeing some of your other stuff along the way.
I am thoroughly amazed and impressed by all of your stuff, not just Forged Fear, but that IS a big part of it.
Thank you for the two favourites on the two mario related artworks that I brought to life using both pencil and paper, along with a tablet and a flash program that I use to make comics such as I did with the comic that you favourited.
